Mathematical literacy: an individual’s capacity to identify and understand the role that mathematics plays in the world, to make well-founded judgments and to use and engage with mathematics in ways that meet the needs of that individual’s life as a constructive, concerned and reflective citizen. Scientific literacy: an individual’s scientific knowledge and use of that knowledge to identify การสอบ PISA (Programmer for International Student Assessment) เป็นการส ารวจนักเรียนวัย 15 ปี เพื่อประเมินความพร้อมในการเข้าสู่วัยผู้ใหญ่โดยการ ทดสอบทักษะสองด้าน ได้แก่ 1. ทักษะด้านคณิตศาสตร์:วัด (i) ศักยภาพในการรับรู้และเข้าใจบทบาทของ คณิตศาสตร์ในโลก (ii) ศักยภาพในการตัดสินอย่างมีเหตุผล และศักยภาพ ในการใช้คณิตศาสตร์ ให้เกิดประโยชน์ในฐานะพลเมือง 2. ทักษะด้านวิทยาศาสตร์: วัด (i) ความรู้ด้านวิทยาศาสตร์ และความสามารถในการ ใช้ความรู้นั้นเพื่อระบุปัญหา หาความรู้ใหม่ อธิบาย คะแนนเฉลี่ยด้านการรู้เรื่องคณิตศาสตร์ (Mathematics Literacy) การรู้เรื่องวิทยาศาสตร์ (Scientific Literacy) และการเรียนรู้เรื่องการอ่าน (Reading Literacy) ของนักเรียนที่มีอายุ 15 ปี ซึ่ง ประเมินโดยโครงการประเมินการศึกษานักเรียน นานาชาติ หรือ PISA ((Programmer for International Student Assessment) ซึ่งแบ่งการ ประเมินออกเป็น 2 รอบ กล่าวคือ รอบที่ 1 (Phase I: PISA 2000 PISA 2003 และ PISA 2006) และรอบที่ 2 (Phase II: PISA 2009 PISA 2012 และ PISA 2015) ในการประเมินผลนักเรียนจะวัดความรู้ทั้ง 3 ด้าน แต่ จะเน้นหนักในด้านใดด้านหนึ่งในการประเมินแต่ละ ระยะ กล่าวคือ
