1.1. Elderly
Number and Growth Rate of the Elderly
There were major factors causing
the demographic to change in the past 50
years, which had been affected age
structure. For example, a declining of total
fertility rate from 5.7% in 1970 to 1.6 in
2 0 1 4 ; a decreasing birth rate from 40
persons per 1,000 persons (in 1970) to 7
persons per 1,000 persons (in2014) and a
declining of death rates; from 12 persons
per 1,000 persons (in 1970) to 7 persons per
1,000 persons (in 2014).
Those changes have an impact on a
decline of the proportion of the children,
whereas the proportion of elderly
continuously increases. The results from the
2010 census showed that there were 12%
of older persons and it was estimated to be
26.6% and 32.1% in 2030 and 2040
respectively. This is the evidence that
Thailand is now entering into ageing society
and will engage in the absolutely ageing
society, with more than 20% of population
aged 60 and over within the near future.
Moreover, data from population
projection showed that the older persons
would stay longer, that is, in 2040 there will
be 6.1% of the elderly with 80 years old and
over, from only 2.0% in 2014, which is due to
an advancement of health system and an
awareness of health care of the people.
