1.1.2 Elderly
Number and Growth Rate of the Elderly
There were major factors caused the
demographic to change in the past 50 years
had been affected aged structure. For
example, a declining total fertility rate from
5.7% in 1970 to 1.6 in 2014; a decreasing
birth rate from 40 persons per 1,000 persons
(in 1970) to 7 persons per 1,000 persons
(in 2014) and a declining of death rates;
from 12 persons per 1,000 persons (in 1970)
to 7 persons per 1,000 persons (in 2014).
Those changes have an impact on a
decline of the proportion of the children,
whereas the proportion of elderly
continuously increases. The results from the
2010 census showed that the numbers of
older persons were 8,508,196, there were
12% of older persons, and it was estimated
to be 26.6% and 32.1% in 2030 and 2040
respectively. This is the evidence that
Thailand is now entering into ageing society
and will engage in the absolutely ageing
society, with more than 20% of population
aged 60 and over within the next 2-3
decades.
Moreover, data from population
projection showed that the older persons
would stay longer, that is, in 2040 there will
be 6.1% of the elderly with 80 years old and
over, from only 2.0% in 2014, which is due to
an advancement of health system and an
awareness of health care of the people.
